Turkmenistan's youth actively participate in environmental issues for sustainable development
Today, the National Youth Conference on Climate Change was held at the Oguz Khan University of Engineering and Technology of Turkmenistan, bringing together more than 120 leading young people, Youth Ambassadors for the Sustainable Development Goals, active citizens in the field of ecology, representatives of government agencies, UN agencies and experts. The Foreign Ministry reports.
The LCOY 2025 conference in Turkmenistan was officially endorsed by YOUNGO, the plenipotentiary group on children and youth under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and was organized by YOUNGO members in collaboration with the country's leading youth.
The event, supported by the Government of Turkmenistan and UN agencies, was an effective platform to exchange views, discuss climate change issues, and adopt a unified Youth Roadmap on Climate Change, which will be presented at the upcoming Youth Summit and Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belem, Brazil.
Opening the conference, representatives of the Government of Turkmenistan and the UN system noted the contribution of young people to climate protection efforts and the implementation of national initiatives on climate change. They also emphasized that young people are important partners in implementing national commitments to the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.
During the conference, participants were divided into six thematic working groups: climate change mitigation, adaptation, climate finance, environmental education, biodiversity and environmental protection, and integrated water resources management. Experts and coordinators from relevant fields explained the objectives and expected outcomes to the youth, while the youth shared their experiences in their communities, climate change initiatives, and developed their knowledge of environmental policy.
After the working sessions, group leaders presented their recommendations, which were incorporated into a draft of the Turkmenistan Youth Climate Change Action Roadmap. These recommendations will then be incorporated into the final version of the Turkmenistan Youth Climate Change Declaration to be presented at COP20 and COP30.
The Conference of Youth (COY) is an annual international event that brings together leading young people and active citizens to discuss solutions to climate change. In 2025, COY20 will be held in early November in Belem, Brazil, and will serve as a preparatory platform for COP30 – the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will take place from 10 to 21 November 2025.
