For the first time in Turkmenistan, a pilot project is being launched that aims to systematically include children with disabilities in the general education system.
The British Embassy in Turkmenistan and UNICEF have jointly implemented this project.
As noted in a UNICEF press release, the project will create an inclusive and safe learning environment. It will be combined with a multifaceted and sustained support aimed at increasing access to education for children with disabilities, supporting their integration into society, and combating societal stereotypes related to disability.
The project will be implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. This partnership will allow for the implementation of inclusive teaching methods in schools, the development of supporting regulations, and the contribution to broader social changes towards acceptance and inclusion in society.
The project's work will also contribute to the implementation of the National Concept on Inclusive Education adopted by the Government of Turkmenistan.
Through this partnership, UNICEF will support the modernization of pilot school infrastructure to ensure accessibility for children with disabilities. This will include the provision of assistive technologies and tools. The project will also actively engage teachers, parents and local communities to combat negative perceptions of disability and to better understand the importance of inclusive education.
By developing the skills of teachers, educators, and inclusion professionals, the project will provide consistent, personalized support to children with disabilities, helping them to reach their full potential and participate fully in society.
By promoting inclusive education, this project will not only open the doors of schools to children with disabilities, but will also promote a change in society's attitude towards them — creating opportunities for every child to learn, develop, and succeed.
