Working visit of the European Commissioner for International Cooperation to Turkmenistan

On 12 March, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation Jozef Sikela paid a working visit to Turkmenistan. In the context of the growing geopolitical importance of Central Asia, this visit underlines the importance of regional cooperation for the European Union and the special role of Turkmenistan in this process.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cooperation with Turkmenistan, in particular in areas of mutual interest for Turkmenistan and Europe, such as economic modernization, development of transport links and transition to a green economy.As part of the visit, the delegation led by the European Commissioner visited the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. The European Commissioner met with the Director General of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan. At the meeting, the parties noted the significant potential of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, which can turn it into a major transit hub between Europe and Asia.This corridor opens up investment opportunities in logistics, transport and trade, reducing the delivery time of goods to Europe to about 15 days. The parties also emphasized the need to integrate Turkmenistan into regional and global trade networks, modernize infrastructure, and expand opportunities for attracting investment within the framework of the Global Gateway strategy. In this regard, the launch of the Global Gateway platform in Ashgabat in 2024 was announced. The Chairman of the “Turkmendenizderyayollary” Agency and the Head of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport spoke at the meeting. Their speeches covered in detail the potential and investment opportunities of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, the Marine Merchant Fleet CJSC, and the Balkan Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Yard. In particular, it was noted that dry cargo vessels with a carrying capacity of 6100 tons are currently being built at the Balkan Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Yard. After the meeting, the guests were acquainted with the capabilities of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport and the Balkan Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Yard.

Turkmenistan calls for ensuring access to water resources for landlocked countries

Turkmenistan called for ensuring equal and equitable access to water, water resources, and sea routes for landlocked developing countries. This was stated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the People's Council Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in his speech at the International Vienna Forum on Energy and Climate. "As for another topic of this forum, which is supporting landlocked developing countries, Turkmenistan's role in this matter is clear and obvious. These countries should be provided with equal and fair access to water, water resources in a broader sense, as well as sea routes," Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted. According to him, such an approach is not only a political and legal, but also a morally justified condition. It is a responsibility to present and future generations. The National Leader of the Turkmen people In August 2025, our country hosted a major global event - the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries. The Avaza Political Declaration adopted at the conference has acquired the status of a UN document. This document describes the fundamental principles and approaches that must be implemented to ensure the legitimate rights and needs of tens of millions of people living in 44 countries. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan will carry out consistent and purposeful work to implement all the provisions of this document. "We hope for broad international support in this work," he added. The National Leader also noted that Turkmenistan is working with the UN to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. Based on the resolutions of the UN General Assembly adopted at the initiative of the country on energy and environmental security, transport connectivity, and protecting the interests of landlocked developing countries, Turkmenistan will continue to contribute to uniting the multilateral efforts of states and effectively coordinating practical work with the UN and its specialized agencies, in particular UNIDO. As the National Leader of the Turkmen people noted, Turkmenistan is working together with the UN to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Based on the Resolutions of the General Assembly adopted at the initiative of our country on energy and environmental security, transport connectivity, protecting the interests of landlocked developing countries, and a number of other important areas, Turkmenistan will continue to support the UN and its specialized agencies, in particular UNIDO, in effectively coordinating the actions of member states in order to consolidate multilateral efforts to address the tasks set out in the document.

Two Turkmen higher education institutions served as venues for the international conference "Lomonosov-2026"

Two higher education institutions of Turkmenistan served as venues for four sessions of the XXXIII International Scientific Conference, Lomonosov-2026. The conference was organized by the MV Lomonosov Moscow State University. According to the publication "Turkmenistan: Altyn Asyr" , the forum will be held from April 10 to April 24 in venues in the regions of the Russian Federation, as well as in the branches of the MV Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and China, as well as in the international arena in Turkmenistan, in a total of 44 sections. On April 11, three departments were successfully held at the Dovletmammet Azady Turkmen National Institute of World Languages: "Foreign Languages ​​and Regional Studies", "Theory, History and Methodology of Translation", and "Philology". On the same day, Magtymguly Turkmen State University also served as a venue for another part of the forum in the "Chemistry" section. Students, undergraduates, postgraduates, and young scientists from Turkmenistan participated with their scientific presentations, presenting the results of their innovative research, scientific achievements, and proposals of practical significance. Turkmenistan first joined such international cooperation last year, when two parts of the Lomonosov International Conference were held at the Dovletmammet Azady Turkmen National Institute of World Languages. This year, the international arena of the MV Lomonosov Moscow State University in Ashgabat has been further expanded, which indicates the strengthening of academic cooperation.

The President of Turkmenistan opened the final section of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat highway

During a working visit to the Lebap velayat, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov attended the ceremonial opening of the Mary-Turkmenabat section of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat high-speed highway, the State News Agency of Turkmenistan reported. Construction of the 600-kilometer highway began in 2019. The first section, Ashgabat–Tejen, was commissioned in 2021, and the Tejen–Mary section in 2024. The opening of the Mary–Turkmenabad section marks the final stage of this large-scale infrastructure project. Speaking at the ceremony, Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized the historical significance of the new facility. "Since ancient times, an important section of the Great Silk Road, which once connected continents, ran through our country. We are currently making every effort to restore this route in its modern format," he said. The head of state also noted that the highway connecting the Ahal, Mary, and Lebap velayats with Ashgabat will significantly reduce the time it takes to transport passengers and cargo, increase the capacity of the country's transport system, and boost regional development. The new section of the highway includes six traffic lanes—three in each direction. The roadway is 34,5 meters wide. The Category I road surface is constructed using a multi-layer base of high-quality asphalt concrete, synthetic materials, and reinforcing mesh. Along the highway, there are gas stations, parking areas, rest areas, food service stations, and medical and technical support facilities. Traffic safety is ensured by a continuous video surveillance system and several roadside checkpoints. Toll booths are located at the entrance. Representatives of foreign companies involved in the construction attended the opening ceremony. Luis Felipe Duc Villegas, Director of Commercial Marketing for the French company GEA, presented international certificates of conformity confirming the high quality of the video surveillance and fare collection systems (ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO 14001, ISO 10012). Dong Guosen, a representative of the Chinese company Shandong Jiangfeng New Material Technology, presented a certificate certifying the compliance of road metal barriers with international safety standards, including ISO 1461 and EN 1317. After cutting the symbolic ribbon, Serdar Berdimuhamedov drove onto the highway, blessing the start of traffic on the new section. The festivities included theatrical performances, a demonstration of Ahal-Teke horses, national wrestling competitions, and traditional games. Following the ceremony, the President departed Turkmenabat for Ashgabat.
